Six-Digit Date Display

  1. Design Brief: Display Your Assigned Code

    launch

You will receive a six-digit design code in MMDDYY form. Use that assigned code only; do not substitute any personal information. Your circuit will display the six digits with a dash in positions 010 and 101, giving eight total display states controlled by X, Y, and Z.
  2. Seven-Segment Patterns and Truth Tables

    learn

Design a combinational logic circuit with three inputs and seven outputs. As the inputs X, Y, and Z count from 000 to 111, the outputs a through g drive a seven-segment display to show your assigned six-digit code in MM-DD-YY form — eight characters (six digits plus two dashes), one per input combination. Three inputs give exactly 2³ = 8 combinations, so your circuit is a hardware lookup table: 000 shows the month tens digit, 010 and 101 show dashes, and 111 shows the year ones digit.
The design process: build your truth table mapping each XYZ combination to the segments that must light for that character; fill in a 3-variable K-map for each segment a through g; group the 1-cells and derive a simplified Boolean expression per segment; design the gate circuit in AOI or NAND-only form; then breadboard it with three switches, current-limiting resistors, and the display. Every student’s truth table, K-maps, and circuit are unique to their assigned code.
